Jodie Kimpton is an Australia-based artisan, wildlife artist, photographer, and graphic designer. She runs her own ecommerce website and Etsy shop by the name of Jodee Creations where she sells handmade jewelry inspired by world travel and adventure, as well as greeting cards and prints of her watercolor paintings. Her jewelry pieces include designs such as elephants, mandalas, and lotuses painted on wooden and bronze pendants, brooches, and earrings.
Though Jodie’s background is in graphic design, she spends her free time as a wildlife photographer and artist, creating photorealist pieces. “The meditation-like repletion of painting thousands of tiny hairs was very peaceful to me,” she recalls.
She is experienced in a variety of mediums, and counts watercolor and ink as her favorites, for their fluidity and responsiveness. Jodie explains “[Watercolor] gives a lovely illumination to my work and allows for the colors to shine… I find it easy to build the color up to exactly the intensity I require.” She uses watercolor in her greeting card collections, as well as mixed media, inks, and occasional gouache for opacity or shimmer. For her wooden pieces, Jodie uses acrylic paints for their durability and blending qualities, and protects with varnish.
Jodie’s creative influences include English textile designers, William Morris and Mary White, Australian wildlife artist Paul Margocsy, and Salvador Dali. She has been particularly creatively inspired and influenced by her travels to Thailand, Nepal, and India over the years.
Jodie’s Princeton brush of choice is the Siberia™ Natural Kolinsky Sable. “I love its water holding ability, and its fine point is beautiful… great for layering of color to build up, or blending. Soft natural bristles give a nice finish too… it’s just a lovely brush!”
